Super Micro Climbs 9.5% After Lifting Its Quarterly Revenue Outlook on AI Demand

Super Micro Computer told investors after Tuesday’s close that its September quarter will land well above the numbers it had guided to, and the stock moved on it. Shares of the server maker closed up 9.5% on Wednesday at $35.57, from Tuesday’s $32.47, on volume about 2.4 times the 20-day average. One preliminary update did the work.

A $4 billion jump in the revenue estimate

The company now estimates revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion for its fiscal first quarter, which ran from July through the end of September. Earlier guidance had called for $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. At the midpoints, that is a lift of $4 billion in a single release. The new midpoint of $19 billion runs about a quarter above the $15 billion the company had guided to. Super Micro tied the increase primarily to demand for its AI platforms, the high-end systems used to train and run large AI models.

Gross margin moved the same way. The company put the preliminary figure at 12.0% to 12.5%, up from guidance of 10.4% to 10.8%, and credited a more favorable customer and product mix. At the midpoints, the margin estimate sits 1.6 points above the prior range. Fatter margins on higher revenue is the pairing investors had wanted to see.

The numbers come with a caveat the company stated plainly. They are preliminary and unaudited, drawn from management’s own estimates. Super Micro said the final results may differ. The update also stopped at the top line and margin: it carried no earnings-per-share estimate and no profit guidance, the figures the full report will have to supply.

Still below where it traded this summer

Wednesday’s jump does not undo a rough stretch. Even after the gain, Super Micro trades about 14% lower than it did a month ago. The past three months frame the move: the stock has run as high as $44.94 and as low as $23.83, so Wednesday’s close at $35.57 leaves it roughly 21% below that high and 49% above that low. Volume told the clearer story. Some 82 million shares changed hands, against a 20-day average of 34 million, so buyers showed up in size. The company pinned the jump on AI demand, and the raised outlook reads as one more sign that orders for its biggest systems are still landing. Those systems bundle large numbers of accelerator chips into racks for data centers that train and serve AI models.

On the calendar: November 3

The preliminary figures are a preview, not the close of the book. A fuller picture is two weeks out. Super Micro has set its full fiscal first-quarter results and earnings call for Tuesday, November 3, after the market closes, with the call scheduled for 5 p.m. Eastern. That report will carry the audited revenue and margin, the profit line the update left out, and management’s read on the quarters ahead. Until then, the $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion range is an estimate the company has told investors to hold lightly.
