Eaton shares rose 7.0% on Tuesday, closing at $391.70, after the power-management company reported record third-quarter sales and raised its profit forecast for the rest of the year. Eaton reported before the opening bell. The stock had spent the previous month drifting lower, which left room for the beat to land hard.

Record sales, record margins

Eaton earned an adjusted $3.68 a share in the third quarter, up from $3.07 a year earlier and ahead of the $3.54 that analysts had expected. Revenue reached a record $8.9 billion, a 28% increase from $6.99 billion in the same period last year, with organic growth of 19%. That also cleared the roughly $8.5 billion analysts had modeled for the quarter. Segment margin climbed to an all-time high of 25.3%. On a GAAP basis, the company earned $2.77 a share, against $2.59 a year ago.

Electrical demand carried the quarter. Eaton said its total electrical backlog grew 46% from a year earlier, a sign that orders for the switchgear and power systems that feed data centers, factories and the grid are still arriving faster than the company can ship them. “Our strong third quarter performance reflects the focus and discipline our teams have demonstrated all year,” chief executive Paulo Ruiz said in the release.

The company also lifted its full-year outlook, its third raise of 2026. Eaton now guides to adjusted earnings of $13.70 to $13.80 a share, with a GAAP range of $10.39 to $10.49.

Wall Street stayed constructive after the report. Mizuho kept its Outperform rating and a $485 price target, and JPMorgan maintained an Overweight call on the stock.

The stock had been sliding into the report

The jump came after a soft stretch. Eaton had fallen about 9% over the previous 30 days and entered Tuesday near its three-month low of $361.88. Even with the 7% gain, the stock closed 14.8% below its 90-day high of $459.96, so Tuesday was a recovery, not a breakout. Trading volume ran at 1.3 times the 20-day average, heavier than a normal session without reaching the levels that mark a true scramble.

The pattern is a familiar one this earnings season: a quarter that clears the bar on a name the market had quietly marked down going in. Eaton sits in the part of the industrial economy tied to electrification and data-center power, where order books have run well ahead of shipments for several quarters.

What to watch

The full-year guidance sets a clear benchmark. Eaton closes its fiscal year in December, and its fourth-quarter and full-year results will show whether the record backlog keeps converting into sales at the pace management now expects. The company has raised that forecast at each of its last three quarterly reports, which leaves the bar for the next one higher than it stood in January. The backlog figure itself is the other number to track, because a slowdown in new orders would show up there before it reached revenue. Eaton draws most of its revenue from its electrical businesses, so the direction of those orders carries the most weight for the shares.
