What Is a Stock's Float?

The float is the number of shares actually available for public trading. Here is why it matters.

A company’s float is the number of shares available for public trading — total shares outstanding minus restricted and insider-held shares. A smaller float means fewer shares change hands, which can make a stock’s price move more sharply on the same volume.

Float is one input among many. It does not tell you what a company is worth.
