Micron Climbs 5% as a Memory-Chip Rally Builds Ahead of Earnings

Micron rose 5% Tuesday as tighter memory supply and rising DRAM prices lifted chip stocks a week before the company's fiscal fourth-quarter report.

Micron Technology (MU) rose 5% on Tuesday, closing at $1,096.16 as a rally across memory-chip stocks gathered force. The move tracked rising prices for the DRAM and flash memory that Micron sells, and it arrived a week before the company reports earnings. The timing was not incidental.

Rising memory prices do the lifting

Prices for memory chips have climbed for months, and the firms that track the market expect the trend to hold. Citi placed Micron on an upside catalyst watch, pointing to stronger DRAM pricing in the second half of 2026 and forecasting that DRAM prices could nearly triple next year. Other researchers have gone further on the near term, modeling DRAM contract prices up more than 50% this quarter, with NAND flash rising even faster.

The reason sits in the data centers being built for artificial intelligence. Advanced AI systems need far more high-bandwidth memory than a year ago, and supply has been slow to catch up. That gap hands memory makers pricing power they lacked through the long glut that preceded it. The glut is over. For a maker of both DRAM and flash, that shift touches most of what Micron ships.

The strength ran wider than one name. Chipmakers gained broadly early in the week, with memory and storage makers leading, and fresh analyst calls added fuel, including a new bullish coverage initiation on a storage-chip maker that helped lift the group.

A month-long climb on heavier volume

Tuesday extended a run that began weeks ago. Micron has gained more than 13% over the prior 30 days, and its close sat 9.7% below the 90-day high of $1,213.56 and about 60% above the 90-day low of $681.54. Volume ran heavier than usual. It came in 16% above the 20-day average, short of the spike that tends to mark a blow-off top.

The backdrop helps explain why a 5% day drew attention. The stock has gained about 60% from its 90-day floor, so each new leg higher now moves it in large dollar terms, and the broad market has leaned on semiconductors to set records this month. Memory has been among the loudest corners of that trade.

The report lands September 30

Micron reports fiscal fourth-quarter results after the close on September 30, with a conference call the same afternoon. That print will show whether the pricing gains analysts are modeling have reached Micron’s own revenue and margins, or whether the market has run ahead of the numbers.

Two figures will frame the read. One is the pace of high-bandwidth memory shipments into AI accelerators, the segment analysts credit for the tighter supply. The other is guidance for the quarters ahead, which will speak to how long the industry expects the shortage to last. The fiscal fourth quarter also closes Micron’s financial year, so the report sets the starting line for its next annual outlook. Until then, the stock is trading on the forecast, not the fact.
