Strategy Climbs 4.8% as Bitcoin Rallies on Fading Rate-Hike Bets

The bitcoin-holding company rose with the cryptocurrency on Thursday as traders pared their odds of another Federal Reserve rate increase ahead of a weak jobs report.

Strategy climbed 4.8% on Thursday, closing at $160.50, as bitcoin pushed higher and traders trimmed their bets on another Federal Reserve rate increase. The company, formerly MicroStrategy, holds one of the largest corporate stockpiles of bitcoin, and its shares tend to amplify the coin’s swings. Thursday was a clean example.

Rate-hike odds slip, and bitcoin runs

Bitcoin spent Thursday grinding into the mid-$80,000s as investors dialed back their expectations for further Fed tightening. The central bank raised its benchmark rate to a range of 3.75% to 4.00% in September, and the debate since has turned to whether it moves again or holds. Dovish signals from Fed officials, and a market bracing for Friday’s jobs report, pushed the odds of another increase lower, and Treasury yields eased. Assets that pay no yield, bitcoin among them, tend to look better when rate expectations drop.

Strategy rose more than the coin did. That is by design. The company has spent years converting itself into a bitcoin holding vehicle, funding its purchases with a mix of debt and newly issued stock, which leaves the shares leveraged to the price of the asset sitting on its balance sheet. A modest move in bitcoin can turn into a larger one in the stock. The approach has made the shares one of the most direct equity bets on bitcoin available in the market. Other crypto-linked names, including Coinbase, advanced on Thursday as well, and analyst sentiment across the group warmed; Citigroup lifted its outlook for bitcoin during the week.

Nearly double its summer low

The one-day gain caps a strong stretch. Strategy has risen more than 28% over the past 30 days and now trades at close to double its 90-day low of $82.31, a level it touched earlier in the summer. At Thursday’s close it sat within 5% of its 90-day high of $168.50, near the top of its recent range. The advance came on volume below its 20-day average. The shares have tracked bitcoin’s recovery through the quarter.

That tight link cuts both ways. The same leverage that pushed the stock up 4.8% on a smaller move in bitcoin works in reverse when the coin falls, which is why Strategy’s single-day swings routinely outpace the broad market. Investors who buy the stock as a bitcoin proxy are buying that volatility along with it.

What to watch

The September jobs report landed Friday morning. It was weak. Payroll growth came in well below forecasts, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2%. Soft labor data strengthens the case for the Fed to hold steady, and bitcoin extended its gains above $86,000 after the release. Rate-futures markets leaned further toward a pause once the numbers crossed the wires. The central bank’s next scheduled rate decision is due October 28. For a company whose share price moves with bitcoin, those macro signposts tend to steer the stock more than anything on its own calendar.
