Strategy fell 6.8% on Wednesday, closing at $153.37, after bitcoin slid below $84,000. The company is the token’s largest holder. Its shares fell more than twice as fast as the coin, a reminder of the leverage built into the stock.
The sell-off started in oil and bonds
Bitcoin dropped under $84,000 during the session, into the low $83,000s, extending a retreat from above $87,000 that it had struggled to clear for much of the month. The coin had opened the day near $85,500 before sliding toward $83,700. Reporting tied the move to crude oil, which jumped on attacks against Iranian tankers and revived inflation worries. Those worries pushed Treasury yields higher. The 10-year topped 5.3%. When safe government debt pays that much, assets that produce no income have to work harder for a buyer’s money, and bitcoin produces none of it.
The selling ran across the crypto market, and forced liquidations of leveraged positions added to the pressure. Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy, holds several hundred thousand bitcoin on its balance sheet, a stockpile it has spent years building. That makes its shares a leveraged bet on the coin’s price. The leverage runs both ways. The same mechanism that magnified this year’s gains magnified Wednesday’s loss, and a move of about 3% in bitcoin became a 6.8% move in the stock. By the close the decline had deepened past the 5% to 6% drops reported earlier in the day.
The pressure was also closer to home
Strategy buys its bitcoin largely by selling new stock, and coverage of the session noted investor unease over leaning on share sales while the coin is falling. Each sale raises cash to buy more of an asset whose price had just turned lower. The company has drawn on an at-the-market stock program to fund purchases through the year. It is a model built for a rising bitcoin price. The price was not rising.
Still up on the month
The drop lands on a chart that has climbed. The swings are wide. The stock had gone into Wednesday close to its 90-day high before the slide knocked it back. Even after the fall, Strategy is up 12.3% over the past 30 days. It now sits 9% below its 90-day high of $168.50 while holding 86% above its 90-day low of $82.31, a range that spans more than a double and comes with putting a volatile asset at the center of the business. Some 21.7 million shares traded, close to the 20-day average, so the decline arrived without an unusual rush of volume.
Bitcoin, oil and the 10-year
The stock’s direction tracks the coin. Strategy closed the session following bitcoin below $84,000, and the forces reporters pointed to, the price of crude and the path of Treasury yields, act on the coin before they reach the shares. The oil move itself traced to the Middle East, where reported attacks on Iranian tankers drove crude higher. The funding model is the other moving part, because every new share sold to buy bitcoin reshapes the math behind the stock.
