June retail sales are the marquee data point of Thursday’s session, arriving at 8:30 a.m. ET at the front of a packed morning calendar, with a heavy round of corporate earnings — led by Netflix — giving traders a second focal point into the evening.
On the calendar today
The 8:30 a.m. ET slot carries the bulk of the day’s data. Headlining it is June retail sales, the session’s only high-importance release, with the datapack showing a 0.2% month-over-month forecast against a 0.9% prior reading. The retail sales control group is pencilled at 0.5% versus 0.7% previously, while the ex-autos measure is set at -0.1% against 0.8% before. The same 8:30 window brings weekly initial jobless claims (forecast 217,000, prior 215,000) and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index (forecast 13, previous 10.3).
At 10:00 a.m. ET, the focus shifts to housing and inventories: the NAHB housing market index (forecast 35, previous 35), pending home sales (month-over-month forecast -0.5% versus 3.8% prior; year-over-year prior 4.8%), and business inventories (forecast 0.3%, previous 0.5%).
Two Fed speakers bracket the day, with Logan scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET and Jefferson in the evening at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Reporting today
Three coverage-universe names are on the earnings docket: GE Aerospace, Intuitive Surgical and Netflix.
Backdrop
Stocks closed higher across the major averages on Wednesday. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% to 7,572.40 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.3% to 52,658.64, while the Nasdaq Composite led with a 0.6% gain to 26,269.23. The Cboe Volatility Index finished at 16.1 and the 10-year Treasury yield settled at 4.58%, leaving the tape calm heading into Thursday’s data.
What to watch
- A data-heavy open. Retail sales is the only high-importance release on the slate, and it lands in the same 8:30 a.m. ET window as jobless claims and the Philadelphia Fed index — three prints hitting at once before the bell.
- A full earnings evening. Netflix headlines the reporting names alongside GE Aerospace and Intuitive Surgical, spanning streaming, industrials and medical technology.
- Fed voices on both sides of the session. With Logan speaking at midday and Jefferson after the close, commentary bookends a calendar that is otherwise led by the morning’s economic data.
As always, it is the reaction to these scheduled releases — not any single forecast — that tends to set the tone for the tape.
