Intel headlines a busy Thursday for corporate results, with five other large-caps reporting alongside the chipmaker. The economic calendar is modest: two mid-tier reads land before the opening bell, led by the weekly jobless-claims tally. Today’s earnings reach across semiconductors, defense, telecom, rails and industrials. The lineup is broad.
On the calendar today
Two economic releases hit at 8:30 a.m. ET, both before the open. Initial jobless claims lead the schedule. The forecast is 212,000 new filings, against 208,000 the prior week; the series counts Americans applying for unemployment benefits for the first time each week. The claims figure is the timelier of the two, updated every week. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index arrives at the same time, against a prior reading of -0.1. It is a broad monthly gauge of U.S. economic activity. Neither is a top-tier release. No other major data sits on today’s calendar.
Reporting today
Six names Bellwize covers report today: Comcast in media and broadband, Honeywell International in industrials, Intel in semiconductors, Lockheed Martin in defense, T-Mobile US in wireless, and Union Pacific in freight rail. The group spans five sectors. The reads run from chip demand to defense budgets to freight traffic. All six report during the summer earnings season, when large-cap results bunch into a few crowded weeks.
Backdrop
The three major indexes finished Wednesday slightly lower. Losses were small. The S&P 500 slipped 0.14%, or 10.24 points, to 7,498.96. The Dow eased 0.01%, down 6.06 points, to 52,218.58. The Nasdaq Composite fell the most, off 0.57%, or 146.30 points, to 25,690.90. The VIX jumped 9.68% to 18.25. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.63%. All five gauges Bellwize tracks moved on the session.
What to watch
Intel anchors the day. It carries the semiconductor read and the megacap-tech read at once. Lockheed Martin brings the defense side, and Union Pacific offers a window into freight volumes across the economy. Rails and defense both track spending across the wider economy, so results from those two carry beyond their own sectors. Comcast and T-Mobile fill out the communications names, while Honeywell rounds out industrials. On the macro front, the 8:30 a.m. jobless-claims figure is the one scheduled item with much market pull, setting the weekly reference point for the labor market. Beyond that pair of morning reads, the session belongs to the earnings docket.
