The morning is stacked with data. Producer prices print at 8:30 a.m. ET, the calendar’s highest-importance release, and inflation is the thread running through the overnight wires. The core producer-price reading and weekly jobless claims land at the same minute, with two Federal Reserve officials speaking on either side. The data run carries into Friday, when retail sales and a preliminary read on consumer sentiment close the week.

On the calendar today

Producer prices (PPI) headline the 8:30 a.m. ET releases, the day’s only high-importance print. The index tracks what firms receive for goods and services, an early read on cost pressure that often filters through to consumer prices later on. Forecasts call for a 0.2% monthly gain, after a 0.3% decline the month before. Core producer prices, which strip out food and energy, are out at the same time and pegged at 0.3% against 0.2% previously. Initial jobless claims, also at 8:30, carry a 202,000 forecast versus 199,000 a week earlier.

Two Fed voices bracket the numbers. The Fed’s Hammack speaks at 8:15 a.m. ET, and the Fed’s Barkin follows at 8:40. No large-cap names Bellwize covers report results today.

Wednesday’s close

Stocks finished Wednesday mixed. The S&P 500 closed at 7,748.50, up 0.26%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.54% to 26,588.49. The Dow eased 0.04% to 53,770.27, so the Nasdaq’s advance outpaced a flat blue-chip index. In the rates market, the 10-year Treasury yield slipped to 4.70%. The VIX settled at 14.53.

The week ahead

Friday brings two high-importance releases: retail sales at 8:30 a.m. ET, with forecasts of a 0.1% monthly gain after 0.2%, and the preliminary Michigan consumer-sentiment index at 10:00 a.m. ET, seen at 54.5 against 55.2 last month.

The following week turns to the retailers, a window onto how consumers are spending. Home Depot reports Tuesday, Aug. 18. Lowe’s and Target follow Wednesday, Aug. 19, rounding out the home-improvement and big-box reports.

What to watch

Start with the data. The producer-price figures are the morning’s main event, and the two Fed appearances sit within a half hour of the release. Any commentary on the inflation path will land against a fresh number, giving markets an early sense of how policymakers are reading it.

Weekly jobless claims arrive at the same 8:30 mark, the latest gauge of layoffs across the economy.

Inflation has been the dominant theme across the overnight news wires. This morning’s producer prices are the next scheduled data point in that story. They feed into the broader inflation gauges the Fed weighs, and traders will watch the reaction in stocks, Treasury yields, and the dollar into the open.
