The morning turns on the American shopper. Retail sales for July print at 8:30 a.m. ET, the calendar’s highest-importance release, and a preliminary read on consumer sentiment follows at 10:00. The same theme runs into next week, when the big-box retailers open their books. The earnings slate is quiet today.
On the calendar today
Retail sales headline the 8:30 a.m. ET releases, the day’s marquee number and one of two high-importance prints. The report measures monthly spending across stores and online sellers, the broadest monthly signal on household demand. Forecasts call for a 0.1% monthly gain, after 0.2% the month before. Sales excluding autos are pegged at 0.2% against a 0.2% decline previously. The control-group measure, which strips out the most volatile categories and feeds into GDP, is seen at 0.3% after 0.5%.
The second high-importance release comes mid-morning. The University of Michigan’s preliminary consumer-sentiment index lands at 10:00 a.m. ET, forecast at 54.5 versus 55.2 last month. The index tracks how households feel about their finances and the economy, and its inflation-expectations readings often move markets as much as the headline. Business inventories print at the same time, expected up 0.1% after 0.3%. The Fed’s Venable speaks at 9:00 a.m. ET, the only scheduled central-bank appearance on the day. No large-cap names Bellwize covers report results today.
Thursday’s close
Stocks finished Thursday higher. The S&P 500 closed at 7,798.99, up 0.65%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.81% to 26,803.03. The Dow rose 0.13% to 53,839.99. In the rates market, the 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.68%. The VIX settled at 14.51.
The week ahead
Tuesday, Aug. 18 brings two high-importance housing releases at 8:30 a.m. ET: housing starts, forecast at a 1.34 million annual rate after 1.427 million, and preliminary building permits, which ran at 1.374 million the prior month. Home Depot reports the same day.
The retailers stay in focus Wednesday, Aug. 19, when Lowe’s and Target report. Together with Home Depot, they open a window onto home-improvement and big-box spending.
What to watch
Start with the 8:30 print. Retail sales are the morning’s main event, the freshest read on whether households kept spending through July. The number sets the tone into the open, and markets will watch the reaction in stocks, Treasury yields, and the dollar.
Consumer sentiment follows at 10:00. The preliminary Michigan index arrives against last month’s 55.2, and traders read it alongside the spending data for a fuller picture of demand.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq led Thursday’s advance, up 0.81%, ahead of the S&P 500’s 0.65% and the Dow’s 0.13%. With no major earnings due, the morning’s data prints are the session’s clearest catalysts. Traders will watch whether the recent tech leadership holds into the open.
