Markets today: a light open before Nvidia and Core PCE
A thin Monday calendar gives way to Nvidia earnings and the Fed's preferred inflation gauge midweek, with a payrolls benchmark revision due Friday.

The trading week opens with a thin calendar and a full one waiting behind it. Nvidia reports Wednesday, the same morning that brings the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge and a second estimate of second-quarter growth. Fed Chair Warsh speaks Friday, alongside a preliminary benchmark revision to the payrolls count. Monday itself asks little. A regional activity index before the bell and a Treasury secretary’s speech after lunch, with little else to move the tape before the week’s real business begins midweek.
On the calendar today
No high-importance U.S. economic data is scheduled today. Both items on the docket rank medium. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index is due at 8:30 a.m. ET, following a prior reading of −0.02. The index blends dozens of monthly indicators into a single gauge of national activity, where a value below zero marks growth beneath its historical trend. Treasury Secretary Bessent speaks at 2:00 p.m. ET. No company in Bellwize’s coverage reports today, which leaves the session leaning on the broader tape rather than any single headline.
Where last week left off
Stocks closed Friday higher. The S&P 500 finished at 7,674.37, up 0.43 percent. The Dow led the major averages, adding 0.98 percent to 53,277.01, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.43 percent to 26,180. Each of the three major averages gained less than one percent on the day. Volatility stayed low, with the VIX at 15.92. The 10-year Treasury yield ended the session at 4.69 percent.
The week ahead
The pace picks up sharply after the Monday lull.
- Wednesday carries the week’s weight. At 8:30 a.m. ET the schedule stacks the second estimate of second-quarter GDP, the core PCE price index, personal income and personal spending, and durable goods orders into one release window. Three covered companies also report: Nvidia, CrowdStrike and Salesforce.
- Friday brings two more high-importance items at 10:00 a.m. ET: a speech from Fed Chair Warsh and the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ preliminary annual benchmark revision to nonfarm payrolls, the yearly recalibration of the payroll count to fuller tax records.
What to watch
The week’s first data point lands early, with the Chicago Fed index at 8:30 a.m. ET against that −0.02 prior. Treasury Secretary Bessent’s afternoon appearance is the other scheduled event on the day, and his remarks are the only real chance for a policy headline before Wednesday. Beyond the calendar, energy ran as one of the most-covered corners of the overnight tape, with oil and the large producers drawing steady attention, a thread worth watching as North American trading gets going. None of it reshapes the week. The heavy data and Nvidia’s results still sit two days out. The rest waits for Wednesday.
