Markets today: a thin data morning before Friday's payroll revision

A light Thursday calendar sits between Nvidia's after-the-close results and a Friday that brings the annual payroll benchmark revision and a speech from Fed Chair Warsh.

Stocks come into Thursday little changed, with the market still working through Nvidia’s quarterly report, released after Wednesday’s close. The morning calendar is thin. Weekly jobless claims and a batch of trade and inventory figures arrive at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, and the Jackson Hole symposium is in its final day. The week’s real weight lands Friday, when the government publishes its preliminary annual revision to nonfarm payrolls and Fed Chair Warsh delivers a scheduled speech.

On the calendar today

Initial jobless claims lead the 8:30 a.m. ET slot, with forecasters looking for 208,000 against 206,000 the prior week. The same release carries a set of trade and inventory readings. The advance goods trade balance is seen at a $99 billion deficit, narrower than the previous $101.4 billion. Advance wholesale inventories are pegged at 0.1%, down from 0.2%, and advance retail inventories excluding autos follow a prior reading of −0.4%. These are advance estimates, the government’s first cut at the data, subject to revision in later releases. The Kansas City Fed’s Jackson Hole symposium, a medium-billing event, closes out its run.

Backdrop

The major indexes finished Wednesday close to flat. The S&P 500 ended at 7,675.70, down 0.02%. The Dow slipped 0.21% to 53,463.88, and the Nasdaq Composite eased 0.08% to 26,130.20. The VIX settled at 15.03, and the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.64%.

The week ahead

Friday, Aug. 28. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the preliminary annual benchmark revision to nonfarm payrolls at 10 a.m. ET. It is a once-a-year recalibration of the payroll count; last year’s preliminary figure lowered the tally by 911,000. Fed Chair Warsh speaks the same morning.

Tuesday, Sep. 1. JOLTS job openings and the ISM manufacturing PMI both land at 10 a.m. ET, following prior readings of 7.36 million and 55.6. Dell Technologies and Palo Alto Networks report results.

What to watch

The claims number is the morning’s clearest labor signal. A print near the low 200,000s would extend a long stretch of historically light layoffs, and the market tends to read the weekly series closely when a broader jobs picture is due within days.

The trade and inventory data look sleepy, but they feed straight into third-quarter GDP tracking models. A wider or narrower goods deficit shifts the net-exports line those estimates run on, which is why an 8:30 release that rarely makes headlines still moves the math.

And the tape is still absorbing Nvidia, one of the most heavily weighted stocks in the major indexes, which posted fiscal second-quarter results after Wednesday’s close. Moves in the largest names carry outsized weight in the capitalization-weighted benchmarks, so a single report can color the whole session’s tone. In the days after a report that size, the reaction tends to ripple across the AI-linked stocks that trade alongside it.
