The Federal Reserve takes the day. At 2 p.m. ET the central bank delivers its interest-rate decision alongside a fresh set of economic projections, the event Wall Street has spent the week trading around. It does not arrive in a vacuum. Retail sales for the prior month land at 8:30 a.m. ET, the morning’s main read on whether the consumer is still spending, and the chair’s press conference follows the decision at 2:30 p.m. ET.

On the calendar today

The economic data is front-loaded. Retail sales, the morning’s one high-importance print, is due at 8:30 a.m. ET with a forecast of 0.8% against the prior month’s 0.6% decline; the control-group and ex-autos measures publish alongside it, as do import and export prices. Mid-morning brings two readings at 10 a.m. ET, the NAHB homebuilder index (forecast 34, previous 35) and business inventories. The EIA’s weekly crude and gasoline stock figures follow at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Then the calendar clears for the Fed. The rate decision and updated economic projections publish at 2 p.m. ET, with the target range currently at 3.75% and the consensus forecast carried into the meeting at 4.00%. The press conference begins at 2:30 p.m. ET. Net long-term securities flows close the day at 4 p.m. ET.

Backdrop

Stocks closed lower on Tuesday. The S&P 500 finished at 7,585.73, down 0.45%. The Dow fell 0.63% to 52,093.11, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.78% to 25,981.57. The pullback was broad but shallow, and the VIX eased to 16.8 even as the decision drew near. The 10-year Treasury yield closed the prior session at 4.97%, the reference traders carry into the afternoon.

The week ahead

  • Thursday, Sept. 17: Housing starts and building permits at 8:30 a.m. ET, the month’s main reading on residential construction, with starts forecast at 1.31 million and permits at 1.41 million.

What to watch

The rate decision is the session’s fulcrum. Beyond the level itself, the projections show where policymakers expect rates to head from here, and the press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET is where the chair frames the reasoning. Positioning has run through this afternoon all week, across Treasurys, the dollar, and rate-sensitive equities.

Retail sales get their moment first. The 8:30 a.m. print is the freshest hard data on consumer spending, and it lands hours before the Fed speaks. It is one of the last major releases the market sees before the decision, which gives an ordinary monthly number added weight today.

Energy has its own marker at 10:30 a.m. ET, when the EIA reports weekly crude and gasoline stocks. A large build or draw can move the energy complex on its own, regardless of what the Fed does later in the afternoon.
