Two releases set the tone for this week, and both land after today. Wednesday brings the Core PCE price index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, and Friday brings the September jobs report. Between them they carry the week’s clearest reads on inflation and the labor market. Today opens the run with a lighter slate: job openings and consumer confidence in the morning, then three Fed officials on the tape through the afternoon. Stocks begin after a broad decline Monday.
On the calendar today
Job openings (JOLTS) print at 10 a.m. ET, with a 7.23 million forecast against 7.271 million a month earlier. It is the day’s lone high-importance print. Consumer confidence arrives at the same hour, seen at 89.2 versus 89.4. The S&P/Case-Shiller home-price index came earlier, at 9 a.m. ET, forecast at 2.2% year over year, up from 2.1%. Fed speakers fill the afternoon: Goolsbee at 1 p.m. ET, then Musalem at 1:30 and Williams at 2. Weekly crude inventories from the API close the schedule at 4:30 p.m. ET, forecast at a 1.9 million-barrel draw.
Backdrop
Stocks closed lower Monday across the board. The S&P 500 finished at 7,683.69, down 0.77%. The Dow ended at 51,481.51, off 0.67%. The Nasdaq Composite settled at 26,820.38, down 0.92%, the weakest of the three. Among the large-cap names Bellwize covers, Palo Alto Networks led the gainers, up 4.6%, while Arm Holdings fell 8.7% at the other end. Volatility stayed contained, with the VIX at 15.91. The 10-year Treasury yield sat at 5.17%.
The week ahead
- Wednesday: GDP growth, final reading, at 8:30 a.m. ET, forecast 1.5% against a 2.1% prior. Personal spending lands at the same time, seen at 0.8% against 0.2%, alongside the Core PCE price index at 0.3% versus 0.2% and a personal income reading forecast at 0.4%, flat on the prior month. Micron reports.
- Thursday: the ISM manufacturing PMI, the month’s read on factory activity, at 10 a.m. ET, forecast 54.9 against 54.6. Nike reports.
- Friday: the September jobs report at 8:30 a.m. ET, the week’s marquee release. Nonfarm payrolls are forecast at 84,000, down from 162,000 the prior month, and the unemployment rate is seen holding at 4.1%.
What to watch
The three Fed appearances are the day’s main event for rate watchers, and Fed commentary was the loudest single theme across the wires overnight. Job openings anchor the morning as the labor gauge before Friday’s payrolls, with consumer confidence at the same hour adding the household side. Energy rounds out the watch list: the API’s weekly inventory figure lands after the close, forecast at a 1.9 million-barrel draw. The rest of the week does the heavy lifting. Today sets the table.
