The minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting arrive at 2 p.m. ET, and they drop into a tape already fixed on the rate debate. Fed and rates coverage led the overnight wires by a wide margin. The calendar fills in around that center, with weekly energy inventories at mid-morning and a fresh mortgage-rate read already out. Friday brings the first October look at consumer sentiment. The calendar leans rate-sensitive from the open, and the minutes are the item traders have circled. Today has one obvious headline.
On the calendar today
The weekly mortgage-rate gauge came out at 7 a.m. ET, with the 30-year rate at 7.49%, up from 7.3% the week before. Energy inventories follow at 10:30 a.m. ET: the government’s weekly tally of crude oil stocks, seen at a build of 1.9 million barrels against 0.922 million a week earlier, alongside gasoline stocks, which drew down 1.684 million barrels in the prior report. Then the main event. The FOMC minutes publish at 2 p.m. ET, the detailed account of the meeting that set the current rate stance.
Where stocks closed Tuesday
Stocks finished Tuesday higher across the board. The S&P 500 closed at 7,818.93, up 0.58%. The Dow added 0.49% to 51,521.28, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.45% to 27,599.79. Each of the three major averages gained less than a full percentage point. The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.31%. The VIX closed at 16.
The week ahead
- Thursday: PepsiCo reports.
- Friday: the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment index at 10 a.m. ET, with a forecast of 47.6 against 48.1 in the prior reading; Delta Air Lines also reports.
What to watch
The rate path runs through this afternoon. The September minutes are the day’s clearest signal, and they land with the 10-year Treasury yield sitting above 5% and Fed commentary leading the morning’s headlines. The minutes record the meeting whose rate decision the market has traded off ever since, so the language around the vote carries weight. Traders will read it for how officials weighed the risks on each side of their mandate.
Oil has the market’s attention too. The weekly EIA crude and gasoline figures at 10:30 a.m. ET arrive with energy among the most-discussed themes on the overnight wires. Those numbers track the balance of supply against demand for both fuels, and they land in the same mid-morning window as the broader data flow. A move in either series tends to register first in energy shares.
And the mortgage read is already in hand. At 7.49%, the 30-year rate offers one more gauge of how far borrowing costs have climbed as the Fed’s path stays in focus. It feeds the same rate story the afternoon minutes will headline.
